RESUMO

The Longosomatidae, a poorly known polychaete family, includes only 23 recognized species; in this study, based on morphometric and taxonomic analyses, we describe a new species with three morphotypes: Heterospio variabilis from the Gulf of California, Mexico. The specimens examined exhibit large morphological variations but were clearly separated from close species due to a unique combination of morphological characters: chaetiger 9 as the first elongated chaetiger, four to eight branchial pairs; chaetae from chaetiger 10 forming rings in two rows, posterior row with thin and robust capillaries, anterior row with subuluncini, aristate spines, acicular spines and thick acicular spines. With the discriminant analysis, carried out on 11 morphometric characters, the presence of three morphological groups were recognized (Wilks' lambda= 0.093, p = 0.0001). However, the variables selected to discriminate the specimens (partial Wilks' lambda > 0.57) were correlated to their size: number of branchiae, body width, prostomium width, rate length CH9/CH1-CH8, length CH1-CH8 and length CH9 (r > 0.5). So, we concluded that they belong to a single species with three morphotypes: morpho A with eight branchial pairs, morpho B with 5-6-7 pairs and morpho C with 4 pairs. No correlations between the distribution of the distinct morphotypes along the eastern gulf shelf and the environmental conditions where they settle were detected.

Earth internal seepage erosion in weathered bedrock under infrequently used hydraulic structures is often overlooked, which causes some solid particles to break away from the solid skeleton, degrading the earth's strength, and even causing unanticipated hydraulic engineering failures. The flood on the Oroville dam spillway in California in 2017 was caused by disturbed water flow due to a crack in the spillway chute caused by internal erosion in poorly weathered bedrock. The abnormal water flow of the spillway in the early stage and subsequent investigation revealed that the main reason for the accident was the insufficient weathered bedrock under the spillway chute. In this study, we formulated a coupled hydro-mechanical mechanism for internal erosion in weathered bedrock during the early stages. Using this model, we conducted an internal erosion numerical simulation at early stage, and the results showed that the physical characteristics of the weathered bedrock were degraded. Our results show the coupling analysis of quantitative computation during the early stage of internal erosion in weathered bedrock, which can provide an early warning method for the occurrence of internal erosion to avoid hydraulic disasters.

Climate change is expected to impact the spring phenology of perennial trees, potentially altering the suitability of land for their cultivation. In this study, we investigate the effects of climate change on the bloom timing of almond orchards, focusing on California, the world's leading region for almond production. By analyzing historical climatic data, employing a model that considers hourly temperatures and fall non-structural carbohydrates to predict bloom dates, and examining various Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) scenarios, we assess the potential impacts of climate shifts on plant phenology and, consequently, on land suitability for almond farming. Our findings reveal that, within the next 30 years, the land suitable for almond production will not undergo significant changes. However, under unchanged emission scenarios, the available land to support almond orchard farming could decline between 48 to 73% by the end of the century. This reduction corresponds with an early shift in bloom time from the average Day of Year (DOY) 64 observed over the past 40 years to a projected earlier bloom between DOY 28-33 by 2100. These results emphasize the critical role climate shifts have in shaping future land use strategies for almond production in Central Valley, California. Consequently, understanding and addressing these factors is essential for the sustainable management and preservation of agricultural land, ensuring long-term food security and economic stability in the face of a rapidly changing climate.

This study investigates how California English speakers adjust nasal coarticulation and hyperarticulation on vowels across three speech styles: speaking slowly and clearly (imagining a hard-of-hearing addressee), casually (imagining a friend/family member addressee), and speaking quickly and clearly (imagining being an auctioneer). Results show covariation in speaking rate and vowel hyperarticulation across the styles. Additionally, results reveal that speakers produce more extensive anticipatory nasal coarticulation in the slow-clear speech style, in addition to a slower speech rate. These findings are interpreted in terms of accounts of coarticulation in which speakers selectively tune their production of nasal coarticulation based on the speaking style.

BACKGROUND: Increased use of eHealth technology and user data to drive early identification and intervention algorithms in early psychosis (EP) necessitates the implementation of ethical data use practices to increase user acceptability and trust. OBJECTIVE: First, the study explored EP community partner perspectives on data sharing best practices, including beliefs, attitudes, and preferences for ethical data sharing and how best to present end-user license agreements (EULAs). Second, we present a test case of adopting a user-centered design approach to develop a EULA protocol consistent with community partner perspectives and priorities. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory, qualitative, and focus group-based study exploring mental health data sharing and privacy preferences among individuals involved in delivering or receiving EP care within the California Early Psychosis Intervention Network. Key themes were identified through a content analysis of focus group transcripts. Additionally, we conducted workshops using a user-centered design approach to develop a EULA that addresses participant priorities. RESULTS: In total, 24 participants took part in the study (14 EP providers, 6 clients, and 4 family members). Participants reported being receptive to data sharing despite being acutely aware of widespread third-party sharing across digital domains, the risk of breaches, and motives hidden in the legal language of EULAs. Consequently, they reported feeling a loss of control and a lack of protection over their data. Participants indicated these concerns could be mitigated through user-level control for data sharing with third parties and an understandable, transparent EULA, including multiple presentation modalities, text at no more than an eighth-grade reading level, and a clear definition of key terms. These findings were successfully integrated into the development of a EULA and data opt-in process that resulted in 88.1% (421/478) of clients who reviewed the video agreeing to share data. CONCLUSIONS: Many of the factors considered pertinent to informing data sharing practices in a mental health setting are consistent among clients, family members, and providers delivering or receiving EP care. These community partners' priorities can be successfully incorporated into developing EULA practices that can lead to high voluntary data sharing rates.

Understanding processes leading to disease emergence is important for effective disease management and prevention of future epidemics. Utilizing whole genome sequencing, we studied the phylogenetic relationship and diversity of two populations of the bacterial oak pathogen Lonsdalea quercina from western North America (Colorado and California) and compared these populations to other Lonsdalea species found worldwide. Phylogenetic analysis separated Colorado and California populations into two Lonsdalea clades, with genetic divergence near species boundaries, suggesting long isolation and populations that differ in genetic structure and distribution and possibly their polyphyletic origin. Genotypes collected from different host species and habitats were randomly distributed within the California cluster. Most Colorado isolates from introduced planted trees, however, were distinct from three isolates collected from a natural stand of Colorado native Quercus gambelii, indicating cryptic population structure. The California identical core genotypes distribution varied, while Colorado identical core genotypes were always collected from neighboring trees. Despite its recent emergence, the Colorado population had higher nucleotide diversity, possibly due to its long presence in Colorado or due to migrants moving with nursery stock. Overall, results suggest independent pathogen emergence in two states likely driven by changes in host-microbe interactions due to ecosystems changes. Further studies are warranted to understand evolutionary relationships among L. quercina from different areas, including the red oak native habitat in northeastern USA.

Ceratocystis canker caused by Ceratocystis destructans is a severe disease of almond, reducing the longevity and productivity of infected trees. Once the disease has established in an individual tree, there is no cure, and management efforts are often limited to removing the infected area of cankers. In this study, we present the genome assemblies of five C. destructans isolates isolated from symptomatic almond trees. The genomes were assembled into a genome size of 27.2 ± 0.9 Mbp with an average of 6924 ± 135 protein-coding genes and an average GC content of 48.8 ± 0.02%. We concentrated our efforts on identifying putative virulence factors of canker pathogens. Analysis of the secreted carbohydrate-active enzymes showed that the genomes harbored 83.4 ± 1.8 secreted CAZymes. The secreted CAZymes covered all the known categories of CAZymes. AntiSMASH revealed that the genomes had at least 7 biosynthetic gene clusters, with one of the non-ribosomal peptide synthases encoding dimethylcoprogen, a conserved virulence determinant of plant pathogenic ascomycetes. From the predicted proteome, we also annotated cytochrome P450 monooxygenases, and transporters, these are well-established virulence determinants of canker pathogens. Moreover, we managed to identify 57.4 ± 2.1 putative effector proteins. Gene Ontology (GO) annotation was applied to compare gene content with two closely related species C. fimbriata, and C. albifundus. This study provides the first genome assemblies for C. destructans, expanding genomic resources for an important almond canker pathogen. The acquired knowledge provides a foundation for further advanced studies, such as molecular interactions with the host, which is critical for breeding for resistance.

The competitive exclusion principle establishes that the coexistence of closely related species requires a certain degree of resource partitioning. However, populations have individuals with different morphological or behavioral traits (e.g., maturity stages, sexes, temporal or spatial segregation). This interaction often results in a multi-level differentiation in food preferences and habits. We explored such resource partitioning between and within three batoid species: Hypanus dipterurus, Narcine entemedor, and Rhinoptera steindachneri in the southern Gulf of California, Mexico, using a combination of stomach content (excluding R. steindachneri) and stable isotope analyses. We found a clear differentiation between H. dipterurus and N. entemedor, where the latter exhibited more benthic habitats, supported by a greater association to infaunal prey and higher δ13C values. Though the degree and patterns of intra-specific segregation varied among species, there was a notable differentiation in both sex and stage of maturity, corresponding to changes in specialization (i.e., isotopic niche breadth) or trophic spectrum (varying prey importance and isotopic values per group). This work is a promising step towards understanding the dietary niche dynamics of these species in a potentially important feeding area within the southern Gulf of California, as well as the biological and ecological mechanisms that facilitate their coexistence.

Leptospirosis, the most widespread zoonotic disease in the world, is broadly understudied in multi-host wildlife systems. Knowledge gaps regarding Leptospira circulation in wildlife, particularly in densely populated areas, contribute to frequent misdiagnoses in humans and domestic animals. We assessed Leptospira prevalence levels and risk factors in five target wildlife species across the greater Los Angeles region: striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis), raccoons (Procyon lotor), coyotes (Canis latrans), Virginia opossums (Didelphis virginiana), and fox squirrels (Sciurus niger). We sampled more than 960 individual animals, including over 700 from target species in the greater Los Angeles region, and an additional 266 sampled opportunistically from other California regions and species. In the five target species seroprevalences ranged from 5 to 60%, and infection prevalences ranged from 0.8 to 15.2% in all except fox squirrels (0%). Leptospira phylogenomics and patterns of serologic reactivity suggest that mainland terrestrial wildlife, particularly mesocarnivores, could be the source of repeated observed introductions of Leptospira into local marine and island ecosystems. Overall, we found evidence of widespread Leptospira exposure in wildlife across Los Angeles and surrounding regions. This indicates exposure risk for humans and domestic animals and highlights that this pathogen can circulate endemically in many wildlife species even in densely populated urban areas.

RESUMO

In 1989, Thomas Donaldson requested the California courts to allow physicians to hasten his death. Donaldson had been diagnosed with brain cancer, and he desired to die in order to cryonically preserve his brain, so as to stop its further deterioration. This case elicits an important question: is this a case of euthanasia? In this article, we examine the traditional criteria of death, and contrast it with the information-theoretic criterion. If this criterion is accepted, we posit that Donaldson's case would have been cryocide, but not euthanasia. We then examine if cryocide is an ethically feasible alternative to euthanasia. To do so, we rely on the ethical doctrine of double effect.

Intraspecific whistle variation in dolphins has been explained in the context of geographical isolation, soundscape, and social structure. Whistles of two ecotypes of bottlenose dolphins from La Paz Bay, Gulf of California, were analyzed. Both ecotypes showed similar whistle contours. However, they could be identified by contour maximum frequency which was predominantly above 15 kHz for oceanic dolphins and below 15 kHz for coastal dolphins. The different whistle frequencies of the two ecotypes could result from differences in group size and acoustic characteristics of their respective habitats, suggesting potential future passive acoustic monitoring applications.

Importance: Empirical evidence is needed on how a capitated, risk-based county plan performs as a viable public option in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace in California. Objective: To estimate whether LA Care-a capitated, county-based public option and California's largest public insurer-was associated with health insurance premium growth in the Los Angeles (LA) regions of Covered California (CC), the ACA exchange in California. Design, Setting, and Participants: This economic evaluation used ACA silver plan premium data within the 19 CC regions. Difference-in-differences and event study models used data on plan-level premiums from Health Insurance Exchange Compare for years 2014 to 2022 to estimate the association between LA Care and ACA premium growth in LA. Exposures: The intervention was LA Care becoming the lowest-cost health plan on the ACA exchange in 2018. The treatment group included the East and West LA regions, and the control group included the remaining 17 CC regions. Main Outcomes and Measures: The main outcome variable was annual premium growth of plans on CC from 2014 to 2022. Results: Using 504 plan-level observations for 2014 to 2022, ACA premium growth in LA declined by 4.8% after LA Care became the lowest-cost health plan on the exchange in 2018 (coefficient estimate, -0.048; SE, 0.022; 95% CI, -0.093 to -0.002). Savings due to lower premium growth from 2019 to 2022 were calculated to be $345 million, with approximately 70% of the savings ($242 million) going to the federal government. Conclusions and Relevance: In this economic evaluation, LA Care was associated with lower premium growth of other health insurance plans in the LA regions of CC, with the majority of savings going to the federal government. California could have captured these savings if it had applied for and received a State Innovation Waiver under section 1332 of the ACA. LA Care may be a viable public option with the potential to be expanded across California through the state's 16 other county-based health plans.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Monsonia angustifolia is traditionally used to treat anthrax, heartburn, diarrhea, eye infections and hemorrhoids. Dodonaea angustifolia is frequently used as a treatment for dental pain, microbial infections and jungle fever. The two plant species were selected due to the presence of secondary metabolites such as coumarins, flavonoids, terpenoids, saponins and polyphenolics from the crude extracts, which exhibit pharmacological significance. The pure isolated compounds from the crude extracts are known for their diverse structures and interesting pharmacophores. AIM: To isolate and identify antibacterial and antifungal chemical constituents from Monsonia angustifolia and Dodonaea angustifolia plant extracts and evaluate the cytotoxicity of pure compounds from the crude extracts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Extractives from M. angustifolia and D. angustifolia plants were isolated using chromatographic techniques and structures were elucidated based on NMR, IR and MS spectroscopic techniques. A microplate serial dilution method was used to evaluate the antibacterial activity of extracts and pure compounds against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and antifungal activity against Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans. The cytotoxicity was determined using the 3-(4, 5-dimethylthiazol)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. RESULTS: The dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol crude extracts from the plants exhibited significant inhibition of microbial growth. The phytochemical investigation of these active crude extracts led to the isolation of five pure active compounds, 5-methoxyjusticidin A (1), cis-phytyl diterpenoidal fatty acid ester (2), stigmasterol (3), ß-sitosterol (4) and 5-hydroxy-7,4'-dimethoxyflavone (5). Stigmasterol (3) showed good antifungal activity against Cryptococcus neoformans with a minimum inhibition concentration (MIC) of 25 µg/mL and Candida albicans (MIC = 50 µg/mL). CONCLUSION: Compounds (1-5) isolated from Monsonia angustifolia and Dodonaea angustifolia showed antibacterial and antifungal activities and were non-toxic against Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells and VERO monkey kidney (VERO) cells.

Medicinal plants are sources of natural antioxidants thanks to their secondary metabolites. Previous studies showed that administration of Erodium glaucophyllum (EG) (Geraniaceae family) was found to alleviate the deleterious effects of obesity-induced damage on liver, heart and kidney. This study, carried out on adult male Wistar rats, evaluates the inhibitory effects of supplementation with E. glaucophyllum extract on obesity. Under our experimental conditions, administration of Erodium aqueous extract decreased the total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, and triglycerides levels as well as ASAT, ALAT, LDH, PAL levels and TBARS concentration; and increased the (HDL) with the antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, GPx) in liver, heart and kidney, compared to HFD group. The anti-obesity effects of the Erodium extract in several organs were mainly due to the interaction of these bioactive molecules (polyphenols, flavonoids, and tannin compounds) and the enzyme system which could be determined by phytochemical analysis.

Importance: Individual health insurance marketplaces established through the Affordable Care Act of 2010 (ACA) fill a critical gap for those who lack other coverage options. The high degree of coverage turnover, or churn, has raised concerns about affordability and strategic behavior on the part of individuals to sign up only when they need care. Objective: To assess the role of California's ACA marketplaces in the broader health care landscape by understanding enrollment tenure and churn. Design, Setting, and Participants: This cross-sectional study analyzed survey data from a representative, probability-based sample of enrollees in California's ACA marketplace, Covered California, collected immediately after the open enrollment periods in 2018, 2019, and 2021. Administrative data from Covered California from January 1, 2014, to December 31, 2021, were used to analyze marketplace tenure. Survey data included 9571 heads of households aged 18 to 64 years who were newly enrolled or had recently terminated their plan, directly drawn from Covered California's administrative records. Administrative data included individuals up to age 65 years who enrolled in the marketplace during 2014 to 2021. Exposures: New enrollment in or termination from health care coverage through California's ACA marketplace. Main Outcomes and Measures: Enrollment tenure in California's ACA marketplace, sources of coverage prior to enrolling and after terminating coverage, and demographic or plan characteristics associated with the decision to go uninsured. Results: Median (IQR) length of coverage among 5.4 million enrollees (mean [SD] age, 38 [16] years; 17% Asian American/Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander, 2.5% Black or African American, 23% Latino [response options were Hispanic, Spanish, or Latino origin], 29% White, 7.5% categorized as other [including American Indian/Alaskan Native, multiple races, and other], and 21% of unknown race or ethnicity) was 14 (6-35) months, and 41% to 46% of enrollees disenrolled within 1 year, with substantial variation by subgroups. Despite this churn, only 14% (95% CI, 12%-15%) of 6474 terminating members surveyed across 3 years (2018, 2019, and 2021) reported being uninsured after leaving the marketplace, with the rest moving to job-based coverage or Medicaid. Most of those surveyed (mean [SE] percentage, 56% [0.016] individuals) reported having had employer-sponsored insurance or Medicaid prior to enrolling in the marketplace. Among subsidized renewal candidates, Latino candidates were 1.5 percentage points (95% CI, 0.8-2.3 percentage points) more likely to go uninsured compared with White candidates, and those with no expected physician visits in the coming year were 4.8 percentage points (95% CI, 2.4-7.2 percentage points) more likely to go uninsured vs those who expected physician visits. Conclusions and Relevance: The results of this cross-sectional study of coverage churn found that ACA marketplaces served 2 distinct types of individuals, long-term enrollees but, more often, individuals with short-term-coverage needs due to a change in eligibility for other insurance. These results suggest that marketplaces are smoothing coverage disruptions and that policies to reduce gaps in coverage should be designed with this in mind.

Mating systems and seed reproduction in gynodioecious Geranium asiaticum Serg. (G. bifolium Patrin.) were studied in four coenopopulations of Western Siberia (Novosibirsk region). The bisexual flower of hermaphrodite individuals of G. asiaticum is characterized by a longer flowering (2.5-3.5 days) than the pistillate flower of female individuals (2-2.5 days), due to the passage of the male (staminate) phase at the beginning of morphogenesis: G. asiaticum is characterized by strict protandry. Mating of individuals of G. asiaticum occurs according to the type of xenogamy, autogamy is completely excluded. In an experiment to isolate individual flowers, 100% of isolated pistillate and bisexual flowers dried up without fertilization. In an experiment on artificial pollination of flowers, 85% (17 out of 20 flowers) of pistillate flowers formed fruits, whereas only 10% (3 out of 30 flowers) of bisexual flowers formed fruits. There were no significant differences in the number of flowers on the generative shoot in female and hermaphrodite individuals. Significant differences were found between heterosexual individuals in terms of the number of fruits and the number of seeds per generative shoot: female individuals formed 16.1-22.1 times more fruits and 13.8-28.3 times more seeds than hermaphrodites. Pistillate flowers formed an average of 1.85 ± 0.08 seeds per flower, and bisexual flowers 0.07 ± 0.02 seeds per flower, i.e., on average, female plants form 26.4 times more seeds than hermaphrodites. It was found that the fruits and seeds were formed mainly by female individuals, but hermaphrodite individuals produced the pollen necessary for fertilization. The different degree of sexual differentiation of G. asiaticum and Geranium sylvaticum L. suggests that in genus Geranium there are transformations in direction of the formation of dioecy.

California's sage scrub habitats support a diversity of nectar and host plants for migrating and resident populations of painted lady butterflies (Vanessa cardui) throughout all seasons. North America experiences spring V. cardui migrations involving butterflies totaling in the millions in some years. These irruptive years are thought to be driven by winter weather patterns at breeding grounds near the US-Mexico border and due to their irregularity, it is difficult to study floral resource use along the migration route. Here we used the community science platform iNaturalist to quantify patterns in V. cardui nectar resource use in sage scrub over time and space during irruptive and nonirruptive years. We identified over 329 different nectaring plant species of varying functional types (72% native to California) visited by adult V. cardui, 195 of which had not been previously identified as known nectar plants for V. cardui. Vanessa cardui butterflies were observed in similar locations regardless of whether an irruptive migration occurred, indicating the presence of either sparse migrants or resident populations across California. Moreover, irruptive years were positively correlated with warmer and wetter local conditions at observation locations. Our results provide new insights into patterns of floral resource use by North American V. cardui by harnessing the power of community science data and while highlighting the factors associated with its North American migration.

While many factors have been implicated in global pollinator decline, habitat loss is a key driver of wild pollinator decline in both abundance and species richness. An increase in and diversification of pollinator habitat, even in urban settings, can assist in the conservation of pollinator populations. In Southern California, a highly fragmented and urbanized landscape with a rich yet threatened native pollinator fauna, the availability of food resources for native pollinators hinges largely upon the selection of ornamental plants grown in the urban landscape. To examine the pollinator attractiveness of ornamental plants in a Southern California context, we installed an experimental garden with common California native and nonnative ornamental perennials and observed floral visitation and visitor community composition for 3 yr. Our study demonstrates that while native pollinators visited common ornamental perennials native to California at a higher rate than they visited nonnative ornamentals, introduced honey bees showed no significant preference for either native or nonnative species. Native plants also received a greater diversity of visitor taxa, including a richer suite of native bees. Plant species differed dramatically in attractiveness, by as much as a factor of 12, even within the native status group. Our results suggest that including a data-driven selection of both native and non-native ornamental perennials in the urban landscape can diversify the assemblage of native pollinators, provide critical floral resources throughout the year, and reduce the impact of honey bee landscape foraging dominance by providing plants highly attractive to native pollinators and less so to honey bees.

BACKGROUND: More than 90% of malaria cases occur in Africa where the disease is transmitted by Anopheles gambiae and Anopheles arabiensis. This study evaluated the anti-mosquito properties of Juniperus virginiana (JVO) and Pelargonium roseum (PRO) essential oils (EOs) against larvae and adults of An. gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) from East Africa in laboratory and semi-field conditions. METHODS: EOs was extracted from the aerial green parts of Asian herbs by hydrodistillation. Their constituents were characterized by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Larvicidal activities of JVO, PRO, and PRO components [citronellol (CO), linalool (LO), and geraniol (GO)] were investigated against An. gambiae sensu stricto (s.s.). The percentage of knockdown effects and mortality rates of all oils were also evaluated in the adults of susceptible An. gambiae s.s. and permethrin-resistant An. arabiensis. RESULTS: GC-MS analyses identified major constituents of JVO (sabinene, dl-limonene, ß-myrcene, bornyl acetate, and terpinen-4-ol) and PRO (citronellol, citronellyl formate, L-menthone, linalool, and geraniol). Oils showed higher larvicidal activity in the laboratory than semi-field trials. The LC50 values for JVO/PRO were computed as 10.82-2.89/7.13-0.9 ppm and 10.75-9.06/13.63-8.98 ppm in laboratory and semi-field environments, respectively at exposure time of 24-72 h. The percentage of knockdown effects of the oils were also greater in An. gambiae s.s. than in An. arabiensis. Filter papers impregnated with JVO (100 ppm) and PRO (25 ppm) displayed 100% mortality rates for An. gambiae s.s. and 3.75% and 90% mortality rates, for An. arabiensis populations, respectively. Each component of CO, LO, and GO exhibited 98.13%, 97.81%, and 87.5%, respectively, and a mixture of the PRO components indicated 94.69% adult mortality to permethrin-resistant An. arabiensis. CONCLUSIONS: The findings of this study show that PRO and its main constituents, compared to JVO, have higher anti-mosquito properties in terms of larvicidal, knockdown, and mortality when applied against susceptible laboratory and resistant wild populations of An. gambiae s.l. Consequently, these oils have the potential for the development of new, efficient, safe, and affordable agents for mosquito control.

Although the southeast region of the Gulf of California has a high fish diversity, due to the high biological productivity, the coastal area of Nayarit has few studies in this regard. The main objective of this work is to describe the variability of the structure of the ichthyofauna in the coastal zone of Nayarit during an annual cycle. Biological samples were collected at 10 stations during February, May, July, and December 2014. The temperature, depth, salinity, and organic material and carbonates in sediments were also recorded. The analysis of diversity includes three facets: ecological, taxonomic, and functional. A total of 82 species belonging to 56 genera, 31 families, 11 orders, and two classes were identified. The most abundant species included Selene peruviana, Stellifer wintersteenorum, Cathorops sp., and Larimus argenteus. Of the total of identified species, 62% were considered as rare according to their abundance and frequency. Although the environmental variables analyzed were variable, all diversity indices did not reveal an evident spatio-seasonal pattern. Likewise, most values of average taxonomic distinctness presented the expected values. However, some values showed a low taxonomic diversity. The indices of functional diversity showed a stable functional richness and redundancy in the attributes of the species.
